In 1864, Princess Elisabeth was born into a Hessian grand ducal family in Darmstadt. In 1884, she married Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, brother
of the then reigning Emperor Alexander III, and received in Russia the name of Grand Duchess Elizaveta Feodorovna.

In 1891, Sergei Alexandrovich was appointed Governor-General of Moscow, and the Grand Duchess began to devote much of her energy to charitable work.

In 1894, the nephew of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich Emperor Nicholas II, who had just ascended the All-Russian throne, married the younger sister of Elizaveta Feodorovna, Princess Alice of Hesse, who became Empress Alexandra Feodorovna.

In 1905, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich was assassinated by terrorists. His wife Elizaveta Feodorovna headed the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, of which her husband was the first chairman, and in 1908 she organized the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy in Moscow and became its abbess.

The Grand Duchess often made pilgrimages. In the summer of 1914, she visited the Perm Province (services at the Transfiguration Cathedral, at the Bishop’s House Church, and at the Assumption Nunnery). She also visited the White Mountain St. Nicholas Monastery.

On the night of July 18, 1918, Elizaveta Feodorovna died as a martyr near Alapaevsk, a town in the Perm Province. In 1992, the Grand Duchess was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.

On August 24, 2017, near the Elizaveta Hospital, named after the Grand Duchess, a monument to the Martyr was consecrated by the Metropolitan Methodius of Perm and Kungur. The monument was set up on the initiative of the Elisabeth-Sergius Educational Society and the Perm Community (Zemlyachestvo).

During the celebration, Metropolitan Methodius said: “Today we glorify in bronze a woman who devoted her life to serving the good, to others. Having been born a German Lutheran princess, Saint Elisaveta became for us an example of a truly Russian Orthodox spirit.”
